Priced at 234,900 yuan, China's First Mass-Produced Pure Electric Car Roewe E50 Officially Released
On the evening of 5 November 2012, the eve before the opening of the 14th China Industrial Fair, which represents the highest manufacturing level of China, the Roewe E50 Release Conference was held at Shanghai Expo Center and its theme is “Creative Green Energy, Driving the Future”.
Positioned as a “Little Urban Pure Electric Car” Roewe E50 is built on a whole-new platform in China. Originated from the Roewe E1 concept, this model was developed with 3 years and SAIC owns its IPR. On the whole-new vehicle platform that SAIC Group has developed for pure electric vehicle, this model is equipped with high-performing electric driving system, electric steering system, thermal management system across the whole car, and other advanced parts to truly realize zero emission. The vehicle has a multi-level high-voltage safety system, and all high-voltage components are designed with IP67 dust and water proof rating. The vehicle has also passed the safety crash test, which fundamentally ensures its safety.
“The successful release of Roewe E50 signifies that SAIC has fulfilled its ‘military promise’ to release a hybrid car with our own brand in 2010 and release plug-in strong hybrid car and pure electric car in 2012, and our objectives of independently grasping three electric core technologies – battery, electric motor, and electric control and promoting the industrialization of key components for new energy vehicles” said Hu Maoyuan, Chairman of SAIC Group, “we are ready to take part in the next round of competitions with the core competence formed within the automotive industry of China.”
The release of Roewe E50 has established a benchmark for China’s mass production and marketing of pure electric car. On the release conference, Chen Hong, president of SAIC Group officially announced the price of Roewe E50 – 234,900 yuan, and the national and local subsidiaries that Roewe E50 enjoys will be reimbursed to the buyers.
Born for “Pure Electric”, Roewe E50 sets an example for creative green energy
SAIC Group implements China’s national energy strategy and keeps up with the latest trend of global development of new energy vehicles. In the “Eleventh Five-Year” period, SAIC has set up its strategy to develop new energy vehicles, including the development objective of manufacturing pure electric vehicles with its own IPR in 2012 – not only release one or two models, but promoting for the maturing and industrializing of the entire industry chain of new energy vehicles.
Different from some electric automotive products already on the market, Roewe E50 is completely developed and owned by SAIC Group. It utilizes a newly developed vehicle platform designed for pure electric vehicles from interior to exterior. During the placing of electric motors and batteries and body design, the balance between vehicle performance and ergonomics was well considered to achieve best space in car and to meet the performance objectives of the entire vehicle, reducing human body injury in collision, which significantly improves the safety performance of the vehicle.
The release of Roewe E50 proves to the world that the automotive industry of China has been capable of developing new platform for new energy vehicles, manufacturing key parts and components, and mass production of new energy vehicles. This is an important result for Shanghai automotive industry to implement “innovating driving force and shifting development”, also a breakthrough in China’s manufacturing of new energy vehicles, which sets a good example for the development of new energy vehicles across China.
The release of Roewe E50 is also an important link for SAIC to complete its strategic layout for new energy vehicles, just as what Chairman Hu Maoyuan said, “With the research, development, manufacturing of Roewe E50 and marketing in the future, SAIC has proven the fact that it has already become the first Chinese automaker to own a complete new energy automotive industry chain, and a leading enterprise for mass production. It is also the first Chinese company capable of developing whole-new platform for new energy vehicles, developing models, designing entire body, as well as sustained R&D and innovations.”
Affordable Price for Common People to Own a Good Little Pure Electric Car
On the morning of April 23 this year, after the opening ceremony of Hannover Messe 2012 in Germany, Premier Wen Jiabao and German Chancellor Merkel visited the SAIC booth to watch new energy vehicles and stayed for more than 10 minutes. Merkel also inquired Chairman Hu Maoyuan of the price of Roewe E50, a pure electric car.
Roewe E50 is the first mass produced Class A00 compact pure electric vehicle in China, filling a blank and occupying a commanding elevation in this segment with four advantages – “stylish smart design, trendy advanced technologies, efficient drive and flexible control, and intelligent multiple safety protections”. Chen Zhixin, general manager of SAIC Passenger Automotive Company and Executive VP of SAIC Group said, “Roewe E50 is the first pure electric vehicle to be sold to general consumers who can easy afford a new energy vehicle.”
According to authoritative data, 70% of Chinese car owners use their cars in cities in 70% of time, and 85% of the owners drive less than 50 kilometers daily. The max speed of Roewe E50 can reach 130 km/hr, max mileage 180 km in uniform velocity test, completely capable of meeting the demands of most urban consumers, making it an ideal transport tool for urban daily life. Roewe E50 can be charged with two ways – for the slow way, household 220V outlet can be used for charging, while the quick way can fill 80% of battery within 30 minutes, adapting to the transport needs of citizens.
Indeed, meeting the future market demands and trend of “small, lightweight, electric, and intelligent”, Roewe E50 provides a best solution to “zero-carbon transport life style” in cities. Surely it will become a darling for the “urban low-carbon living practitioners” in their traveling.
